WRDW12: Tennessee Flight Win Nike Nationals Gold Division
When the Tennessee Flight AAU team lost in the championship at the Boo Williams National Tournament in April, they made a promise to never let it happen again.
Thanks to the play of Maleena Lewis in today's Nike Nationals final, the promise was kept.
Lewis dominated inside and out, scoring in a variety of ways in a 63-60 win. She was successful posting up, driving the lane and hitting three pointers, proving she is one of the country's best prep basketball players.
The game wasn't easy, though. Their opponent, DFW Elite, was down by eight with less than five minutes left but came back, trailing by three in the final seconds and missing a potential game tying shot.
It was all about Lewis, though, and Elite Head Coach Tom Insell says, "I told my coaches, 'The All-American's going to win the game. We're going to the All-American. She's the best player in the country, hands down, and we're getting her the ball to win the game. Everyone else is going to have to take backstage then because that's when your big horses go to play."
The tournament season is now over for the Flight, and they kept true to that promise, winning all four tournaments they entered following the Boo Williams, and not losing a single game in the process.
